Setup FileVault on Mac OS X

This article provides Mac OS X FileVault and walks through the process to set up. FileVault is a software that protects the file system on Mac OS 10.3 and later. It mounts and uses an encrypted file system when the user connects and umountet the filesystem when the user logs. The users home folder encrypted using advanced encryption standard (AES) algorithm. Creates a key from the user password. It is recommended that you set a password on FileVault. The versions of Mac OS 10.4, 10.5 and otherwise save the encrypted file. Mac OS 10.4 saves the encrypted file with sparse disk image that it creates a fancy to say way for Mac is 1 large file. Mac OS 10.5 stores sparse bundle called the encrypted file system as a new image. You break the file in 8 MB of bands sparse bundles. The reason why they are different because Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) must have its reducing sparse bundle for users able as enables time machine.

Notes: The FileVault program uses login password initially to encrypt the files. If you forget the login password, and don’t know the master password too, then the data would be lost.

This is how you can encrypt data in your Mac using the FileVault function

  1. Klick on the apple at the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences.
  2. System SettingsNavigate to Personal->Security on the top right row Klick It.
  3. FileVaultOn the top middle option select the tab that says FileVault.
  4. It’s recommended that you Set Master Password, by first authorizing by entering the login password. So klick the button and set one up.
  5. And after the master password is set, you need to turn the filevault on, so that the system restarts automatically and starts the encryption of your home directory. You can not use the computer or login, until the encryption process completes.
  6. Exit out. Your done!

Tips & Warnings

  • After your done, Klick lock to prevent further changes.
  • Version requirement: Mac OS 10.3+
  • You can specify any select files that you want to FileVault. It encrypts all files into one big file.
