Children and pets go together like apple pie and ice, they are only a logical consequence. Of course, purebred dogs are nice as well but you should know they come with a bigger price tag and often times have more medical issues than your run of the mill mixed breed.
Home Life
What is your schedule like? Are you busy working and living in an urban area? Maybe you work from home and living on several acres in the country. Your lifestyle must be considered when choosing a perfect companion for your children. If you have a small house and yard, then a large dog is probably not the best choice, of course, you can run it, but you have to commit to the exercise they need .

If you keep the above tips in mind you should have no problem coming up with the perfect pet for your home, lifestyle and children.
