Enable/Disable Mac Root Account

Root In Unix-like operating systems is a particular user is different, increased from the director of the privileges and rights to any change of system. The root user does not appear in the user accounts on the Mac. By default the root user is disabled, which according to the amendments made by the root, it is recommended to disable required, separate with him and work on the Mac via regular or admin user accounts.

Below is how to enable or disable the root user on Mac, so follow the steps.

How to Enable the Root on Mac

Step 1

Click on Finder


Then click Go menu and click Utilities

Step 2

Click on Directory Utility

On the following window click on lock to unlock it

On this pop-up screen, enter administrator name and password and click OK

Now, its unlocked to proceed further

Step 3

Click on Edit menu option and then on Enable Root User

Enter Root password whatever you want and re-type in Verify text field and press OK

Step 4

Now, the Root is enabled. Logout from your current user account and Login with the user name Other, that’s the Root so enter the Root in Name field and password which you’ve set in the above steps for root to get login. Make your required changes in system whatever you want.

How to Disable the Root

Step 1

Just logout from Root and Login to the other Admin account. Then Click on Finder >> Utilities folder >> Directory Utility. The following screen will appear, so click on lock to prevent further changes

Now click Edit menu option, you’ll see the Root is disabled
