MAC Tips, by Albel.
While there are many cleaning utility programs available for the Mac, each has its own sets of issues. Until recently if you had to pick one favorite then it was CleanMyMac, hands down. But, only until recently! There is a new kid on the block and it’s called MacKeeper.

While CleanMyMac remains a well established name, MacKeeper is definitely catching up and that’s what we will review in this article.

What makes MacKeeper a star right from the moment you order it is the cost. Coming at an attractive package of $39.95, it is a clear winner in economy as well as price-value proposition. In fact, if one has to get all the facilities that MacKeeper packs, one will end up spending somewhere around $318. That is definitely a lot for a cleaning utility.

MacKeeper definitely packs a punch when it comes to what it can do. This Mac cleaning utility programs offers:

  • Duplicates Finder
  • Anti-Theft service
  • Shredder
  • Data Recovery
  • System Cleaner
  • Back-up
  • Hider
  • Uninstaller
  • Disk Explorer

Now imagine if you have to buy these utilities separately, you might end blowing a week’s salary. Not only that, it would mean you have a lot of icons and higher disk usage. Just in case, if you face any issues with these utilities, the support will be different for each as well. However with MacKepper, you only a single icon to launch and one dedicated support for all sorts of inquiries, via phone, live chat or email. MacKeeper also comes with a one year, single user license and in truest of senses, all in one application.

Let’s see how its different components perform:

Cleaner

This section has 6 cleaner types. They are:

  • Binary Cutter
  • Cache Cleaner
  • Duplicates Finder
  • Language Cutter
  • Log Cleaner
  • Old Files Finder
When you run the program, he sifts through the aforementioned cleaners and reduce the down of a significant amount. During testing, we helped save up to 14.7 GB What makes this feat even more remarkable is the fact that we have this analysis after CleanMyMac and other known applications such as Squeeze, which according to claim are effective, however, and even then the software could easily save us 14.7 GB.

Scanning process takes around 5-10 minutes and the results as shown are good. The old finder and duplicate cleaner prompt you to select and check files that can’t and can be deleted. As a user, you should take this step very carefully.
If one has to rate MacKeeper, it should surely get a Five Star ranking.

Back-up

Now, time to review how it handles the back-ups. Performing backup using MacKeeper is a breeze and it works fine. To save, simply select the file you want to save and choose a backup destination. It could range from a ZeoDisk come to an FTP. Once selected hit Backup Now. The program also offers the possibility to choose the frequency of backups, schedules of each month.

Data Encryptor

If working with backup option was cinch then Data encryptor is a baby walk. It only asks for a password and it’s off. It performs well and must say that we were impressed.

Default Apps

While you do have the OSX manager to manage your file extensions, ‘Default Apps’ allow you to manage files extensions all at one place.

Disk Usage

This utility helps you in picking the biggest folders and deciding whether to remove them or save. It allows the manual intervention that saves a lot of inconvenience in case the entire clean-up operation was automatic.

Login Items

This utility lets you manage the item and applications you want to run on boot up. It’s an effective utility to enhance your Mac’s performance.

Shredder

Probably one of the best utility you need, it helps you shred files just like how the office paper shredder works. It literally obliterates the data ensuring that no critical information gets stolen or misused. It’s great for confidential files and works in a fool proof manner.

Undelete

How many times you end up deleting files and want, you can retrieve them. Well rejoice that Undelete is here. Undelete recompiles the trash and restore all files. It recompiles each byte to ensure not a single data string is interrupted. Once you have scanned the old files, simply click on the recovery and Voila! you have them. In the process, simply choose the destination. Undelete also allows you to categories of the list.

Wise Uninstaller

Wise Uninstaller is another smart utility. It works like AppZapper in its way of functioning. You need to select the application, preference pane, widget and hit uninstall. The result is a 100% uninstall, ideal for removing Norton products.

Anti-Theft Service
This is your watch dog, literally. If you are too fond of your Mac, just like all other users, and if it gets stolen, don’t fret. This utility can track it down.

Just login to the MacKeeper site and select Anti-theft option. Here you can view details along with your Mac’s rough location. Simply report it stolen and it will even capture the snapshot of the thieves.
The moment you report a Mac stolen, iSight lits up and captures the thief in action.

Conclusion
With so many utilities, it’s hard to find faults in MacKeeper. It’s a worth owning package for the amount of flexibility and applications it offers, that too at an economical price. As a single application, we definitely recommend MacKeeper for your Mac.
